The Meat Puppets effectively brought together punk, alternative rock, and country-rock into a style entirely of their own. They sometimes sounded like Neil Young playing hardcore punk in fast-forward, while at other times sounded like Johnny Cash's younger, whinier sibling singing thoughtful folk pieces. Throughout all of the songs, both a steady percussive beat and a solid bass line back intricate guitar plucking and emotive, high-pitched vocals. When Meat Puppets II came out in the mid-80s, its mix of country and punk was unlike anything else around in underground rock. While the album starts off with a couple of zippy tunes, it's not indicative of its sound as a hole. It successfully fluctuates between slow mellow songs and livelier, denser pieces. The Meat Puppets established a sound that was ahead of their time, eventually affecting alternative musicians and bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pavement, and Beck.
