Astral Weeks is an essential album for anyone who has any appreciation for music. An overwhelming amount of credit must be given to Van Morrison for many reasons. First of all, he has one of the most affective and moving voices in the history of music. Secondly, his ability to write such sweeping and majestic love songs with no constraints on traditional pop song time and structure is unbelievable. He does not let standard song structure dictate where his songs go. Rather, he takes as much time necessary to truly express his musical genius. This album presents this perfectly. He brilliantly melds folk, blues, and jazz into one beautiful mixture. The delicate use of backing instrumentation is equally as impressive Morrison's vocal and guitar playing. This is a genre-redefining album that must not be missed.
