This is one of those albums that you have to sit down and listen to all the way through. It is almost like a book, where every
track is a chapter, telling a beautiful story that spans the duration of the album. Jeff Mangum (the sole member of Neutral
Milk Hotel) has a gift in being able to create such vivid lyrical endeavors where the listener can easily become entangled
in every aspect of the tale being told. Mangum brilliantly culminates typical rock instruments with blaring horns and a mixture
of other lo-fi sounds. From beginning to end, we become enveloped in this mixture of sounds. But it is ultimately his endearing,
straining vocals that sets him apart from so many other, yawn-worthy singer/songwriters that unfortunately frequent the airwaves
nowadays (Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, etc.). The album closes perfectly when we hear Mangum stop playing and put down his guitar,
marking the end of the audio odyssey that we have just taken and will most likely want to take many times again.
