2000
La Face

First thing's first, Stankonia is probably one of the more enjoyable albums of the last 10 years. It's chock-full of speedy, tongue-twisting rap grooves that emphasize melody over beat, unlike a lot of rap out there. I'm not saying that there aren't great beats packed into these songs, but OutKast fills its tunes with soulful, funky melodies, that can be found in songs like "So Fresh, So Clean" and "Ms. Jackson". OutKast is a rap duo featuring varied vocal styles from its two members, Dré and Big Boi. Backing these two are synthesizers, programmed percussion, and tons of sound effects. Since the album is so lengthy (running 74 minutes with 24 tracks), OutKast throws in a handful of funny interludes to break up the dense listen into more manageable servings. Despite being a struggle to listen to from start to finish, Stankonia is still a huge accomplishment from one of the most consistently creative rap groups out there today.
