Automatic For The People is a haunting and melancholy album that will make you surrender to its spectacular beauty. The band released this album about a decade into their musical career. It marked a major shift in the band's maturity, giving them almost a new elderly, wise persona. What really hits you (as the listener) with these songs is how the band implements sweeping strings into their acoustic and piano-driven sound. The songs deal with some grim issues, involving loss and death, but are so heartfelt and engrossing that it's hard to turn away from their serious tone. There are some absolute classics on the album, including "Everybody Hurts" and "Man on the Moon". It also has one of my favorite ballads of all-time, "Nightswimming", which is solely worth the price of the album. Looking back on Automatic For The People, its no surprise that it had a big part in R.E.M. garnering legendary status.
