Marquee Moon is unlike another other guitar driven album out there. Emerging from the commendable New York club CBGB's (from where Talking Heads and Patti Smith exploded onto the music scene), Television became one of the first art punk bands of the 70s, having an immense impact on future post-punk bands. Marquee Moon is most noteworthy for its inventively meandering guitar solos, which were unlike almost anything that had been heard before it. While the use of chord progressions had been a basic formula for all preceding guitar driven rock bands, Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd's dueling guitars were much more exploratory and inventive. Of course, this is not the only ingredient to Marquee Moon's success. The album simply features eight spectacular intellectual art rock tracks. Tom Verlaine lends his unique, winding and wavering vocals to the sound. This album is fantastic through and through, and will indefinitely be remembered for its sweeping soundscapes and undeniable imprint it left on rock history.
