The College Dropout is a brilliantly executed rap album from one of today's virtuoso musicians. It signifies the great decision for West to drop his producer cred for his own shot at the mic. Basically, West takes this opportunity to put out a self-reflective masterpiece that highlights such topics as his own religious beliefs, family issues, his time spent rapping through his wired-shut jaw, and his disgust over the concept of college. Just coming off his work as a well-respected producer, Kanye definitely uses his musical connections to his advantage, with the majority of tracks featuring the talents of artists like Talib Kweli, Jay-Z, Mos Def, and many others. The extensive 21-track album is broken up by hilarious commentary tracks (like School Spirit Skits 1 & 2) that are a more than welcome addition to the mix. Every song after the other is instantly enjoyable and memorable, ranging from soulful songs to bouncing rap tunes. To me, this is one of the quintessential rap albums of the 21st century, and deserves to be remembered many years down the road when critics start making new "Best Albums of All-Time" lists.
