2006
Matador

It is apparent just from the album's title that Yo La Tengo holds nothing back on this fantastically eclectic bunch of indie rock songs. The album sums up basically everything that has made the band so great throughout their entire 20 year existence. Every song flows and flourishes with a staggering range of sound. "Mr. Tough" plays with falsettos accompanied by bouncing piano and tooting brass instruments. Then there are songs like "I Feel Like Going Home" that hits deep with its airy orchestration and delicate vocals. Then "Watch Out For Me Ronnie" fights through the sound like an unexpected punch of canny rock. It's Yo La Tengo's earnest love for music and talent at finding great melody that ties everything together so beautifully. The album succeeds on so many levels that it's hard to illustrate through words. It's just one of those albums that has to be heard to believe.
