Yo La Tengo (who got their name from hearing a Spanish Mets outfielder call out for a fly ball) is a great, underappreciated
band to come out of the 80s/90s indie rock scene. One can immediately cast accusations of their heavy borrowing from The Velvet
Underground's experimental and nonchalant demeanor. But then again, what alternative rock band hasn't borrowed an element
(or elements) of their sound from the VU. This trio of musicians has a terrific way of melding catchy pop melodies with elegant
atmospheric tones and harmonies. They resonate pure, underground flavor on many tracks, while at other times finding a heavenly,
sweeping sound to cast their ideas onto. While some might feel the album tends to drag on a bit towards the end, with some
slower instrumental tracks, it has so many great songs thrown into the mix that you would be a fool to pass on it.
