Band of Horses' sound is analogous to if The Shins and My Morning Jacket raised an overprotected child that didn't dare to stray too far away from its parents' habits. While Everything All The Time is filled with well-constructed mid-tempo indie rock, it lacks originality in sound. It takes very safe routes in its songs, with echoey Neil Young-ish vocals accompanied by guitar, banjo, piano, and percussion. If I had never heard The Shins and My Morning Jacket, I would probably think that this album was the best thing since sliced bread. However, it is originality in music that sparks and retains my interest, and is what I so desperately search for every time I explore a new band. Band of Horses just doesn't have it.
