Despite giving Franz Ferdinand many chances, I just can't get into this album. I'll admit that the band is definitely capable
of writing some hooky tunes. However, they just seem like another addition to the surplus of post-modern, art-rock bands that
have been increasingly prevalent since the beginning of the new millennium. Franz Ferdinand's music borrows heavily from The
Strokes' speedy, hooky guitar riffs and their trendy, urban rock personality. However, where The Strokes could deliver on
consistently successful tracks, Franz Ferdinand fails more often than not. In addition, their Jim Morrison-esque vocals give
them a pretentious, "too-cool-for-school" attitude that bothers me. I'll admit that there are a few songs that I
really like in this debut effort. However, it just seems too contrived for me, lacking the authenticity and genuine spirit
that commonly marks great music for me.
